The Potential Reversal of Roe v. Wade
Today is potentially a historic day, as during the waning hours of May 2nd, 2022, Politico published a leaked document suggesting the Supreme Court may be on the verge of overturning Roe v. Wade.
I would be remiss, however, if I did not first point out that the fact that this draft opinion was leaked in the first place, is truly horrifying. Our judiciary branch is supposed to be independent of public opinion and pushback. This is incredibly damaging to the integrity of the court, and I am one hundred percent in support of Chief Justice Roberts launching an investigation into this matter.
Myself and many other conservatives believe this, whether the opinion would have been drafted in our favor or not. And any conservative or pro-lifer that disagrees, is wrong, period.
However, all pro-life advocates today should feel elation. Roe was decided by a 7-2 vote in 1973, a full twenty-something years before my birth. For almost the entirety of my existence, the right has been pushing pro-life policies and politicians, albeit with marginal success at best. For years, the left has been pushing and gaining ground on all fronts.
More recently, though, it would seem things are turning around. Throughout the last several years, the political right has been making progress at the state level. Gallup polls as far back as 2018 have suggested that the pro-life movement is gaining momentum. If this decision ends up becoming official, and Roe v. Wade is overturned in the coming weeks, that will be a significant victory in the fight for life.
We have several people to thank for this, such as former President Trump for the appointing of three Supreme Court justices. These justices themselves, should be thanked and respected for their bravery for even considering this opinion, given the plethora of threats and horrifying media coverage that they will surely be subjected to. But most of all, if you are in any way religious, we should all bow down to and thank God, for using and inspiring all of these people with an almost divine form of courage.
And we should take note of this by this. For conservatives, if Roe is overturned, that day should not mark the end of our fight. Rather it is only the beginning; a stepping stone towards passing legislation that prevents abortion altogether. Us pro-lifers in traditionally ‘red’ states - or in my opinion any state - should be on the phone with our state legislatures begging them to pass legislation banning abortions as early on, and as quickly as possible.
The left has already mobilized with protests, activists, and politicians. While many of them claim to be atheists or not religious, make no mistake. The right to abortion is a holy sacrament for them. They will pursue this fight with a religious fervor. Therefore, those in the pro-life movement cannot afford to be complacent and sit back now, or ever. The fight is only just beginning. And it is going to be ugly.
